Veriton has developed conversion software to take DB/400 files
and convert them to straight ASCII for use on UNIX or PC systems.
This software has the following features:
- IBM Packed, Zoned and Alpha field types supported to allow you
to convert the common types of data held on the AS/400.
- Optional Type 1 journal file decoding. This appends the journal
headers to end of line to allow positional scripts to work on
either normal or journal files, thus saving additional development
effort.
- Large file support (operating system dependent) so that you
can quickly and easily convert files over 2GB in one go.
- Output file splitting: this specifies that the output file doesn't
exceed either a certain number of records, or a certain size.
This allows the migration large database files from an AS/400
and convert the data on a smaller machine (e.g. a PC server) even
if the target platform doesn't support files as big as this.
- Optional input from UNIX standard input allowing you to pipe
the data straight from a tape through the converter and into an
ASCII file. This saves disk space (since no intermediate file
is required on disk) and overall processing time because there
is less disk I/O.

The software has been tuned for high performance: it can convert
over 10GB/hour* conversion rate on a Sun Enterprise server using
a 336MHz
processor.
